“To be an artist – actually, to be a human being […] – it’s all difficult.”

After a long day there are a number of things I enjoy doing: browsing the web; listening to music; doing something creative (eg: art, writing); reading a book. Today was a long day.

After today’s long day, I decided to browse the Internet for something inspirational or motivational. It’s often how I spend hours of my day as the Internet is full of so many amazing things that are always there to be discovered. Today, I want to let you know about a woman called Patti Smith.

Patti Smith is a legendary performer and poet. At the Lousiana Museum of Modern Art, Smith offered her life’s wisdom to the young. A brave thing to do, some might say. This is just some of the advice she gave:

Build a good name. Keep your name clean. Don’t make compromises, don’t worry about making a bunch of money or being successful — be concerned with doing good work and make the right choices and protect your work. And if you build a good name, eventually, that name will be its own currency.

[Life] is like a roller coaster. It’s never going to be perfect — it is going to have perfect moments, and then rough spots, but it’s all worth it.

A writer, or any artist, can’t expect to be embraced by the people [but] you just keep doing your work — because you have to, because it’s your calling.

To be an artist — actually, to be a human being in these times — it’s all difficult. … What matters is to know what you want and pursue it.
