It’s so easy to get caught up in the bright lights and pretty colours of a city. Often, we mistake these artificial elements for beauty. I suppose that’s because they are quite pleasing to the eyes.Cities at nights are some of the most beautiful things to look at.
Whilst it is a given that cities have a lot of things going for them, starry skies are sadly not one of them. The pretty lights bring along pollution, tarnishing the star-studded night skied that we envy the parts of the world that are less polluted for.
Thierry Cohen, a French photographer, imagined life without so many lights and brought his imagination to life in his “Darkened Cities” photograph series.
His work let’s us ponder over whether or not we ever stop and wonder what would happen if we turned off all of these lights? He shows us that we would see real beauty; natural beauty. Something a little like this:
Sans Francisco, California
New York City, New York
São Paulo, Brazil
Hong Kong, China

What do you think of these images? Would you prefer a world where the stars were more exposed, or are you perfectly happy with the bright lights of city night life? How would you propose we lessen our use of lights and reduce pollution so that, one day in the future, our skies may resemble something similar to what Cohen imagines?
